Turkey: Conscientious objector Halil Savda sentenced

Five months’ imprisonment for solidarity with Israeli conscientious objectors

(07.03.2011) Turkish conscientious objector Halil Savda has been finally sentenced on 3 March 2011 to five months’ imprisonment for a solidarity statement for Israeli conscientious objectors Itzik Shabbat and Amir Pasteur on 1 August 2006. Halil Savda was initially sentenced on 2 June 2008 by the Sultanahmet 1st Court of First Instance in Istanbul to five months’ imprisonment for the press statement, but appealed against the sentence. This sentence was now upheld and finalised by the Court of Appeals.

South Korea: Conscientious objector Jihwan Ahn sentenced to 18 months imprisonment

(22.02.2011) War Resisters’ International received information that South Korean conscientious objector and anarchist Jihwan Ahn was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for conscientious objection on 17 February. He was arrested in court and transferred to prison.

(22.10.2010) War Resisters’ International has learned from Forum 18 News Service that three conscientious objectors received prison sentences in Turkmenistan recently, bringing the total of conscientious objectors serving sentences to 10, of which eight are serving labour camp terms between 18 months and two years.

Azerbaijan imprisons conscientious objector

(20.10.2010) Baku, Azerbaijan - A three-judge panel of the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the Nasimi District Court’s conviction of conscientious objector Farid Mammedov. The court pronounced judgment on September 8, 2010, and immediately thereafter the 22-year-old was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and taken to prison to serve a nine-month sentence.
