Booklet Conscientious Objection in Turkey, 2021

(15.05.2021) This booklet is published 30 years after the first public declarations of conscientious objection. It takes stock, describes the solidarity work for the conscientious objection movement from abroad and gives a voice to conscientious objectors, some of whom were active in Turkey for years and have now gone into exile, with an uncertain outcome.

A main focus of this booklet is on the reports of conscientious objectors who have gone into exile. They portray the everyday reality of militarism in Turkey. Beran Mehmet İşçi, Ercan Aktaş, Halil Savda, Mertcan Güler and Onur Erden make clear how important their decisions against war and violence are to them and what repressions they were consequently subjected to. Despite all the imprisonment, torture and repression they have suffered, the reports radiate something positive, pleading for a world without war, oppression, military and violence.

Livret L’Objection de conscience en Turquie

(15.05.2021) Cette brochure est publiée 30 ans après les premières déclarations publiques des objections de conscience. Elle fait le point, décrit le travail de solidarité pour le mouvement de l’objection de conscience depuis en dehors de Turquie et donne la parole aux objecteurs de conscience, dont certains ont été actifs en Turquie pendant des années et sont maintenant en exil, avec un avenir incertain.

Les articles rédigés par les objecteurs de conscience qui se sont exilés constituent le point central de ce livret. Ils montrent la réalité quotidienne du militarisme en Turquie. Beran Mehmet İşçi, Ercan Aktaş, Halil Savda, Mertcan Güler et Onur Erden expliquent clairement l’importance que revêt pour eux leur décision de refuser la guerre et la violence, ainsi que les répressions subies en conséquence. Malgré les emprisonnements, tortures et condamnations qu’ils ont endurés, leurs mots dégagent quelque chose de positif : leur détermination pour un monde sans guerre, sans oppression, sans armée et sans violence.

(15.05.2021) Bu kitapçık, ilk vicdani retlerin alenen açıklanmasından 30 yıl sonra yayınlanmaktadır. Yurt dışından vicdani ret hareketine yönelik dayanışma çalışmalarını değerlendirmekte, anlatmakta ve bir kısmı Türkiye’de yıllardır faaliyet göstermekte olan, bir kısmı da sonu belli olmayan bir yolculukla sürgüne giden vicdani retçilere konuşma hakkı vermektedir.

Bu kitapçığın odak noktası, sürgüne giden vicdani retçilerin raporlarıdır. Türkiye’de militarizmin gündelik gerçekliğini resmediyorlar. Beran Mehmet İşçi, Ercan Aktaş, Halil Savda, Mertcan Güler ve Onur Erden, savaşa ve şiddete karşı verdikleri kararların kendileri için ne kadar önemli olduğunu ve bu nedenle hangi baskılara maruz kaldıklarını açıkça ortaya koyuyor. Çektikleri tüm hapis cezalarına, işkencelere ve baskılara rağmen, raporlar olumlu bir şeyler yayıyor; savaş, baskı, ordu ve şiddetin olmadığı bir dünya için harekete geçme fikrini.

Conscientious Objection and Asylum

(15.05.2021) In the 1990s, several hundred conscripts from Turkey applied for asylum in Germany and other countries. They went public with their conscientious objection, made it clear in front of the Turkish consulate, at press conferences or on other occasions that they were not willing to serve in the Turkish military, especially in protest against the war then waged in southeast Turkey. In many cases, their applications were initially rejected by the authorities. In some cases, they actually succeeded in obtaining protection under refugee law. Quite often this outcome derived from the fact that they had to expect additional criminal prosecution because of their public conscientious objection.
