10.10. online: Global Perspectives on Conscientious Objection
online: Thursday 10 October 2024
18:30-20:00 (UK time)
What is it like for people refusing to fight in Ukraine? What are the challenges for Quakers working to protect the rights of conscientious objectors from a place of faith in a secular system? What is QPSW currently doing around conscientious objection?
Choosing not to fight in the context of war is an extraordinarily brave choice to make and one that Quakers have long championed. In this series of three 90-minute sessions we will hear from voices in different parts of the world.
In this session we will hear from:
- Yurii Sheliazhenko, a Ukranian conscientious objector, pacifist, human rights defender and lawyer;
- Laurel Townhead, QUNO Interim Director and Representative for Human Rights and Refugees;
- Dixe Wills, Campaigns Coordinator (Peace) at Quaker Peace and Social Witness (QPSW);
- Yona, an Israeli who is currently refusing conscription.
